In a country where many young people are pressured to follow the traditional path of school → university → corporate job, Alex Darko Jr. chose a different route one filled with self-discovery, resilience, and bold entrepreneurship.
Born in the UK and raised between England and Ghana, Alex’s story is far from conventional. His father was the CIO of AngloGold Ashanti, while his mother transitioned from nursing to entrepreneurship in home décor. Growing up with a corporate-minded yet entrepreneurial father instilled in him a strong sense of logic, discipline, and moral clarity.
Early Struggles and Self-Discovery
At 15–16, Alex moved from the UK to Ghana. He was homeschooled for his A-levels and later enrolled at the University of Westminster to study Tourism and Planning. However, university life didn’t resonate with him. Feeling lost and unsure about his purpose, he dropped out.
“I was trying to figure myself out,” he recalls. “I had 55 different business ideas and was registering domain names like crazy.”
He entered the corporate world, working in sales for luxury watches and jewelry, later moving into banking with Absa (formerly Barclays). Despite performing exceptionally well consistently hitting top sales and even bringing major partnerships like Taxify (now Bolt) he hit a wall when a well-deserved promotion was denied because he lacked a degree.
That moment became a turning point.
The Birth of Menufinder
In 2017, on Mother’s Day, Alex asked his wife what she wanted to eat. After struggling to find reliable menus online, the idea for Menufinder was born initially as a simple directory to aggregate restaurant menus, locations, prices, and reviews.
The early days were rough. On the same day they launched ads announcing they were live, they had zero riders. Orders started coming in with no one to deliver them.
Then COVID-19 hit in 2020, forcing a major pivot. What began as a “notice board” for restaurants quickly evolved into a full-fledged food delivery platform with its own riders, logistics, and operations.
Building with Purpose and Faith
Alex is unapologetically faith-driven. He frequently references scripture and credits God as the source of the vision. His tattoo “God loves me” serves as a constant reminder.
He emphasizes building a business with integrity:
- “We must be a household name.”
- “Even when you arrive at the airport, you must see Menufinder before anything else.”
- “We are there to add value people come for an experience.”
Under his leadership, Menufinder has grown to serve over 50,000 registered users and partners with more than 130 restaurants. The platform is known for its strong customer service, quality control (including a tasting team), and commitment to reliable delivery.
Leadership Philosophy
Alex runs Menufinder like a ship he stands at the front, scanning the horizon, while the team works together to keep it afloat. He prioritizes:
- A lean, trusted team that has been with him for years
- Character and competence over paper qualifications
- Sustainable growth rather than reckless expansion
- Creating real value instead of chasing hype
He openly admits the journey hasn’t been easy. From unreliable developers to the challenges of building logistics in Ghana, he’s faced numerous setbacks. Yet his commitment to doing things the right way even when it’s slower has kept the company alive while others with bigger budgets have faded.
Looking Ahead
With fresh funding on the horizon (including a committed $1 million investment), Alex’s vision for the next three years is clear:
- Become Ghana’s undisputed #1 food app
- Expand sustainably into other regions (starting with Kumasi)
- Enter new African markets within 5 years
- Build a profitable, self-sustaining business
His mantra remains simple: “Just build something.”
Would you like a shorter version for social media, a more personal/profile-style version, or should I adjust the tone (more inspirational, more business-focused, etc.)?
Let me know how you’d like it refined!
