Nigeria – Alibaba’s Blunt Take on Nigerian Politics Lagos and the Power Game

Veteran Nigerian comedian and social commentator Alibaba Akpobome has sparked conversations online after sharing candid views about Nigerian politics, the attraction of Lagos for political elites, and how power operates behind the scenes.

Speaking during a lengthy interview, Alibaba painted Lagos as more than just Nigeria’s commercial capital. According to him, the city has become a “safe house” for politicians, former governors, business elites, and power brokers seeking influence, comfort, and continued relevance after leaving office.

He suggested that many politicians pursue Senate seats not necessarily to contribute to national development, but to maintain status, influence, privileges, and access to political networks after serving as governors or top government officials.

“There are some people who are in the Senate because they found that other governors are going there,” he said during the conversation. “It is not because they have any valuable thing to contribute.”

Alibaba also described Lagos as a city where political money, luxury living, and influence intersect. According to him, politicians who lose influence in their home states often relocate their families to Lagos, particularly high-end areas such as Victoria Garden City, Banana Island, and Parkview Estate, where they maintain comfortable lifestyles while preparing for future political opportunities.

He further argued that the presence of wealthy politicians and politically connected individuals contributes to rising property prices in Lagos. In his view, political spending has significantly influenced the city’s luxury housing market, making accommodation increasingly expensive for ordinary residents.

During the interview, Alibaba shared what he described as insider conversations about how elections are allegedly influenced in Nigeria. He spoke about the importance of governors, political structures, delegates, party loyalty, and financial power in presidential elections. However, these comments reflected his personal opinions and experiences and were not presented with independent evidence.

The comedian also discussed why he never fully entered politics despite allegedly receiving opportunities in the past. According to him, he was uncomfortable with some of the political processes and compromises expected behind the scenes.

Beyond the controversy, many Nigerians online have praised Alibaba for openly discussing issues that are often debated privately. Others, however, believe some of his statements were too sweeping and unfair to politicians genuinely working for public service.

The interview has once again highlighted ongoing public frustration around governance, political influence, rising living costs, and the perception of inequality in Nigeria’s political system.

It also reinforces Lagos’ unique position in Nigeria — a city seen simultaneously as a land of opportunity, a financial powerhouse, and a center of political and economic influence.

Whether people agree with Alibaba or not, his comments have reignited conversations about power, politics, and the realities shaping modern Nigeria.
